A Hotwireless initiative
Empower your neighbourhood. Start a Community Free WiFi hotspot.
Imagine a community where everyone has access to the digital world. At Hotwireless we believe in bridging the digital divide — and you can be the person who makes it happen in your suburb. Whether you're a local business, an organisation, or a passionate community member, a Community Free WiFi Hotspot uplifts those around you and drives real foot traffic to your door.
What free connectivity actually does
How a single hotspot changes a street.
Here's what our partners around the country are already making possible:
The busy taxi rank
A bakery next to a bustling rank sets up a hotspot. Hundreds of daily commuters check transit schedules, apply for jobs, message loved ones, or pass the time while they wait — all while standing near the shop window.
The sports field or park
A community centre blankets the local soccer field in WiFi. Parents work remotely on their phones while watching their kids play. Teenagers have a safe space to download research for school projects.
The clinic waiting room
A pharmacy near a busy public clinic offers free WiFi. Patients waiting for hours pass the time comfortably, access health information, or reach family while they wait to be seen.
The spaza shop hub
A local corner store installs a hotspot. It immediately becomes the beating heart of the neighbourhood. People gather to connect — and the shop sees daily foot traffic surge along with sales.
The student safe-zone
A business across from a school creates a safe after-hours study zone. Learners who don't have internet at home now have the reliable connection they need to submit assignments or apply for bursaries.
The community hall
A church or community hall sets up a hotspot. Job-seekers drop in to send CVs, small business owners come through to do online banking, and gran comes in to WhatsApp the grandkids.
Simple, sustainable, smart
It pays for itself — here's exactly how.
You supply the line
You need an existing, reliable uncapped fibre line. Most SA home-and-business fibre packages qualify.
We supply the hardware
Buy the hotspot kit from us — once-off. We size it for your space and range and install it properly. No guesswork.
Advertising covers the rest
Local advertisers — the butchery, car wash, hardware store, takeaway across the road — pay to show their specials on your splash page. Those revenues cover your monthly line costs. It's a win-win.
The ripple effect
When connectivity is free, opportunity follows.
Empowering education
Learners access e-learning platforms, download study materials, and complete homework on a connection that doesn't eat their airtime.
Unlocking jobs
Job-seekers browse job portals, email CVs, and join virtual interviews — without needing a café to buy a coffee just to use the WiFi.
Connecting to vital services
Communities get seamless access to government services, banking apps, telehealth, and SARS e-filing — without a data cliff.
FAQ
Common questions about Community WiFi.
Who can host a Community Free WiFi hotspot? +
Any business or organisation with an uncapped fibre line. Spaza shops, cafés, pharmacies, community halls, churches, schools — if you have a reliable connection and a space where people gather, you can host one.
How is it funded? +
Local advertising. Businesses in your area (the butchery, car wash, hardware store, takeaway) pay a small monthly fee to advertise on your WiFi splash page. Those revenues cover your running costs — and often more.
How much does the hardware cost? +
Hardware is a once-off purchase, sized to the coverage you need. A small shop hotspot starts from around R4,500 all-in. A larger field or community area is more. We'll scope it with you during the feasibility step.
Is it legal to share my fibre? +
In most cases, yes — as long as your ISP's terms of service allow sharing (most uncapped home/business packages do). We can check your T&Cs with you. Your fibre is kept secure and ring-fenced from your business traffic.
What about data abuse from heavy users? +
Every user is throttled and time-limited on the captive portal. Nobody can hog the line. The portal also blocks certain heavy-bandwidth categories (torrents, heavy streaming) to keep the connection fair for everyone.
How do I sign up local advertisers? +
We give you a simple media kit you can walk door-to-door with. Many hosts find their first 3-5 advertisers in a single afternoon — local businesses love the direct exposure to walk-by foot traffic.
